Transforming secondary education in Uganda
The Leaders in Teaching (LIT) Uganda Program is a five-year initiative of the Mastercard Foundation aimed at transforming secondary education in Uganda by improving the quality of teaching, school leadership, and learning outcomes. The program runs from June 2025 to July 2030 and is implemented through a consortium of 10 partners led by the Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF) and UNICEF, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The program focuses on four key pillars:
• Recruit – strengthening equitable teacher recruitment
• Train – improving teacher training and competency-based learning
• Lead – enhancing school leadership and management
• Motivate – improving teacher wellbeing, motivation, and retention
Through this initiative, the program will directly engage:
- 67,000 in-service teachers
- 7,500 pre-service teachers
- 6,273 school leaders
- 300 tutors from universities and teacher training institutions
The program also provides 1,000 scholarships for academically talented but economically disadvantaged female student teachers, including refugees and women with disabilities, to train as STEM and ICT teachers.
Implemented in 2,091 secondary schools across Uganda, Leaders in Teaching aims to create inclusive, gender-responsive, and future-ready education systems that equip young people with the skills and competencies needed for dignified and fulfilling work.
