CIES 2022: Sharing knowledge, experiences

As has become the norm, LGF again took part in the Annual Comparative and International Education Society Conference (CIES). This year’s conference took place in Minneapolis, USA. At the conference,  LGF Institutional Development Advisor Mauro Giacomazzi, PhD, and Research Director Martin Ariapa presented different papers. On April 19, 2022, Giacomazzi and Ariapa jointly presented a paper titled: Understanding Children’s and Teachers’ Perspectives of Learning through play: Findings from Rapid Ethnographic Studies in Bangladesh, Colombia and Uganda.

The presentation elaborated on the findings of a Rapid Ethnographic Assessment (REA) conducted in Uganda in November 2021.  The REA aimed at understanding teachers’ and children’s perspectives of learning through play in Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers and primary schools that already incorporate play in learning.

On April 22, 2022, Dr Giacomazzi also presented a paper on how Improved Teachers’ Instructional Design to Nurture Learners’ Critical Thinking. The paper: Young People with big ideas: How Active and Problem-based Learning Build Life Skills, elaborated on findings of a professional development action research study that LGF conducted in order to foster transformation in teachers’ pedagogical practices while developing lesson plans envisioned to provoke and nurture critical thinking among the learners.

With other RELI partners, LGF also presented papers on different topics such as life skills: A Participatory Approach to Developing Contextualized Tools for Assessing Life Skills and Values: The Process and Lessons from East Africa and The Joys and Tears of Contextualization: Lessons from East Africa.

CIES is always a great learning and sharing experience. We look forward to the next experience.
