ALiVE concludes largest life skills assessment in Uganda
The Assessment of Life Skills and Values (ALiVE), secretariat in Uganda through Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education (LGIHE) and Uwezo Uganda has concluded the largest life skills and values assessment in the country. The assessment in Uganda followed similar exercises in Kenya and Tanzania.
The exercise covered 20 sampled districts of Agago, Bukedea, Bukwo, Butambala, Buyende, Jinja, Kagadi, Kampala, Kasese, Kyankwanzi, Kyegegwa, Maracha, Mubende, Nabilatuk, Ntungamo, Oyama, Rukungiri, Sheema and Wakiso ran from August 21 to August 29, 2022.

ALiVE, an initiative of the Regional Education Learning Initiative‘s Values and Life Skills (VaLi) cluster, seeks to carry out an assessment of adolescents aged 13-17 in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, generate evidence, raise awareness to influence policy and build local capacities regarding the life skills and values in East Africa.
The assessment focused on three skills; problem-solving, self-awareness, collaboration, and one value of respect. Speaking about the assessment, the LGIHE Director for Research, Martin Ariapa, said the assessment was a climax to a journey that started in 2018. “Members of VaLi reviewed education systems in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and the competencies that each system prioritized. There are many life skills out there but they settled on the three life skills and one value, as the starting point for the assessment,” Ariapa said.
Ariapa thanked the ALiVE secretariats in the three countries for their efforts in making the process a success, development partners for their support, the technical committees from the academia and the foot soldiers; the volunteers who supported the project.
